Cleaning Your Cashmere | Stain Removal | Preventing & Removing Pilling | Storing Your Cashmere | Quick Tips

Cleaning Your Cashmere
We recommend hand-washing your Cashmere Shop garments with our mild Cashmere Shop Shampoo as this will protect the cashmere fibers, keep them noticeably softer and prolong the life of your garment.

Our garments may also be dry-cleaned, to help with the removal of difficult stains.

Always treat stains promptly.

To hand wash your cashmere garment:

1. Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water and add our mild cashmere shampoo or another gentle soap. Agitate until suds form.

2. Place your garment into the basin and gently squeeze the lukewarm suds through it. Do not wring, twist or rub. You may let it soak for a few minutes.

3. Gently rinse and squeeze the garment in lukewarm fresh water until the water is clear and no suds remain. Do not wring or twist the garment.

4. Keeping the garment in the sink, gently squeeze out as much water as you can.

5. Gather your garment into both hands and gently lay it out flat on a clean towel.

6. Roll the towel up with the garment inside and press out the excess water.

7. Unroll the towel and lay your sweater out flat on a dry, fresh towel.

8. Gently block your sweater into its original shape before allowing it to dry.

9. While it dries, keep your garment away from sources of heat or direct sunlight, such as sunny windows, radiators and clothes dryers.

Stain Removal
When it comes to stains, prevention is the best solution. Allow perfumes and underarm deodorants to dry completely before putting on your cashmere garment. Be wary of using oily products when wearing cashmere.

When stains do occur, treat them promptly.

Use your cashmere shampoo directly on the stain, hand wash according to our instructions and blot until the stain disappears. Do not rub the fabric surface, and do not use hot water.

For difficult stains, or if you are unsure about treating the stain yourself, promptly take the garment to a professional dry cleaner, being sure to give them as much information as you can about the nature of the stain.

Preventing and Removing Pilling
‘Pilling' is the term given to the small, fuzzy balls that sometimes form on the surface of a fabric. Low-quality cashmere is especially prone to pilling as it is composed of mainly short fibers. High-quality cashmere products such those found at the Cashmere Shop will not pill excessively when properly cared for.

Caused by rubbing and friction on the fabric's surface, pilling is most likely to occur under the arms and on the underside of sleeves, but it can also occur in other areas where purse straps, jewelry or other clothing may rub against the garment. Dirty garments are more likely to pill.

Pilling can also be caused by improper laundering technique. Harsh detergents can weaken and break cashmere fibers, and friction during washing can cause loose fibers to bind together and pill on the garment's surface.

Proper laundering technique will prevent pilling and improve the life of your cashmere garment. Regular hand-washing with our Shampoo for Cashmere will help condition your garment's fibers, keeping them supple and preventing breakage. Always hand-wash your cashmere garments to minimize surface friction, and follow our hand washing instructions carefully.

A certain amount of pilling is normal on garments made of natural knit fibers like cashmere, even on high-quality products such as ours. These can be safely picked off by hand.

How to Prevent Pilling:
1. Always purchase high-quality cashmere.
2. Keep your cashmere clean.
3. Always hand-wash with a high-quality cashmere shampoo.
4. When hand-washing, never rub or twist the surface of your cashmere garments; always use a squeezing motion.
5. Avoid wearing purse straps directly on your cashmere garment.

How to Remove Pilling:
1. Lay your garment out on a flat surface.
2. Gently pick the pills off by hand.
